How to choose law firm management software in the UAE

Choosing practice management software touches every case and every client. These are the questions worth asking before you sign, with what makes UAE litigation different.

1. Does it understand UAE courts?

Generic software built for other markets does not know the UAE's multiple judicial authorities: Dubai Courts, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, the Federal Courts and the rental disputes centres.

Ask: can I log hearings before all of them, and any other tribunal by name? Does it cover the stages before court, such as police reports and the Public Prosecution, and after it, such as enforcement?

2. Does it protect you from missed deadlines?

The biggest risk for a law firm is a forgotten hearing or a lapsed appeal window. Good software does not just store the date: it calculates the last day to appeal and alerts the responsible advocate well ahead, more than once.

Ask: who gets the alert, when, and how many times? Can the hearing roll be printed or sent to the advocate easily?

3. Is billing VAT-compliant?

Professional fees in the UAE are subject to 5% VAT. Statements calculated by hand in separate spreadsheets invite errors.

Ask: does the software apply VAT automatically, exact to the fils? Does it bring fees, court fees, payments and retainers into one statement the client understands? Does it track post-dated cheques linked to cases?

4. Where is client data stored, and who sees it?

Client data is a trust. Ask about encryption at rest and in transit, isolation of your firm's data from others, and backups.

Ask about roles inside the firm too: can an advocate see the financials? Good software gives each role only what it needs and keeps an audit trail of every change.

5. Does it really work in Arabic and English?

Legal work in the UAE is bilingual: memoranda in Arabic, clients and companies with English names. The software must handle both languages in the interface, the data and the reports without garbling either.

6. How does it handle AI?

AI saves time on the first draft, but professional responsibility stays with the advocate. Ask: are drafts marked as awaiting review? Can the system file or send anything on its own? The right answer is no.

7. How long does it take to start, and is there a trial?
